Re: Call for Malden City Councillor Jadeane Sica's Resignation or Removal

We are in strong support of and agreement with the Mystic Valley Area NAACP (MVA NAACP)’s statement below, and we deeply appreciate the MVA NAACP’s solidarity in the fight against racism. We agree that “all racism upholds white supremacy, and when racist acts are committed towards anyone, we are all harmed.”

Our initial statement asked for apology, reflection, and reparation of harm done. While we acknowledge Councillor Sica-Bernbaum’s statement about her costume, we have yet to see any of our written expectations met. Since then, violent, anonymous, and racist statements were sent to our Greater Malden Asian American Community Coalition (GMAACC) members and staff in defense of Councillor Sica-Bernbaum — for example, obscenity-laden missives that include insults like “f--- you ch-nk!” and exhortations to “go back to eating your bat soup b---- and shut the ---- up” — in response to our statement.

Given these attacks, as well as the silence of the City Council, specifically Councillor Sica-Bernbaum, we reaffirm our desire not only for an apology as well as reparative actions, but also the resignation of Councillor Sica-Bernbaum.
